DOES CBD HAVE SIDE-EFFECTS OR DRUG INTERACTIONS?
16 November 2018

CBD is generally well tolerated in most people and is considered non-toxic in humans, even in high doses.  The side effects noted in studies include dry mouth, diarrhea, dizziness, changes in appetite and drowsiness.

CBD is a very safe substance but is known to interact with several common pharmaceuticals such as painkillers, statins, blood thinners, insulin & more. CBD deactivates something called the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is involved in metabolizing many drugs. Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the same enzyme group, which is why physicians advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking a medication. By inhibiting cytochrome P450, CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs. Before using CBD oil, discuss all current medications you are taking to avoid interactions.

CBD-drug interactions can be dangerous, but they can also help alleviate side effects while harmoniously improving a patient’s quality of life. Cannabinoid-opioid interactions show great therapeutic potential. THC enhances the painkilling effects of opiates, while CBD can reduce withdrawal and dependence. Patients taking Big Pharma meds should monitor changes in blood levels and, if need be, adjust dosage. Problematic interactions are more likely when consuming high doses of CBD isolate products.
